April 2024 Updates

There are several changes that are coming into effect from April 2024 which will affect NannyPaye clients. We have digested and summarised the relevant points below.

National Minimum Wage (NMW)

Just as we have experienced in previous years, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) is increasing from 1st April 2024.  This year we have an increase to £11.44 for all employees aged over 21. Full rates can be seen below:

Live in employees

Accompanying the changes to NMW rates there has been a major change to The National Minimum Wage Regulations 2015 which previously removed the exemption to pay NMW to workers residing in the family home of their employer.

Full details of the change in legislation can be found here but in summary it removes the exemption for live-in employees that are not also a member of the employer’s family, meaning live-in employees must be paid at least the NMW from April 2024.

What should you do?

If you discover that you will be paying below the new NMW rates you should uplift your employee’s pay in line with the NMW dependant on their age and (should they be a live-in employee) optionally deduct the accommodation offset rate of £9.99 per day. Please contact NannyPaye to arrange this for your employee if you have not done so already.

Please note that if you already pay your nanny more than the new National Minimum Wage rate then you can apply a higher rate of offset, however the maximum deductible from NMW is £9.99 per day.

What happens if you do not make any changes?

You may be liable to pay the full increase to the relevant NMW to your employee and a penalty of up to £20,000.

NI Rates

As part of the chancellor’s Spring Budget, it was announced that there would be a 2% decrease in employee NI rates. NannyPaye will implement this change automatically with no action needed from you.

Sadly employer national insurance has remained unchanged at 13.8%
